How to Choose a Keyboard Tray or Drawer

You know your keyboard tray isn't all it should be, but you don't know what to do about it.  This is a situation that a surprisingly large number of people find themselves in.  As computers become more and more integrated into our work and private lives, having the right kind of keyboard drawer is essential to maintaining a comfortable work space and a healthy body.

If you are in the market for a new keyboard tray or drawer, the following bits of advice may be useful:

Go steel.  Standard-issue keyboard drawers are typically made of plastic or composite materials. These flimsy products have a propensity to break, even with infrequent use.  If you want your keyboard tray to function smoothly year after year, steel is a much better investment.  Many steel keyboard drawers use specialized thin-gauge steel, which is lightweight as well as durable.

To mouse or not to mouse?  While most people use a mouse in addition to a keyboard, not everyone needs a keyboard tray with extra room for a mouse.  Laptop users often prefer to use their built-in trackpads, while cordless mouse owners may need to position their mouse on the desk instead of on the tray.  Some keyboard drawers come with extra mouse room and others do not, so be sure to get the kind that best suits your needs.

The freedom to adjust.  Don't settle for a keyboard tray that is too low, too high, or that sits at a bad angle.  Opt for a fully adjustable or sliding keyboard drawer in order to minimize the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome and other common hand and arm problems.
